Westchester Woman Charged With Attempting To Kidnap Toddler At Hospital ER

A Westchester woman is facing charges for allegedly attempting to kidnap a toddler from the emergency room at an area hospital, the County District Attorney announced.

Laysha Machado, 28, of Yonkers, was arraigned on charges that include attempted kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child dating back to an incident in February at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers.

The indictment alleges that on Feb. 15, Machado entered the emergency room, where she took a stroller with another person’s child inside and fled the building. She was ultimately chased down by security guards outside the hospital and was detained until Yonkers Police investigators arrived.

Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr., the 2-year-old child was safely returned to his mother. The indictment alleges that the child was abducted and “exposed to the risk of serious physical injury.” Machado is scheduled to appear back in court on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
